Alec Rodino Killed After Running into Path of Truck On Interstate

HENRICO CO. – Alec J. Rodino, 24, of Charlotte, NC. was killed early on April 22, 2016, after he ran into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer in Henrico County. The incident occurred at approximately 1:11 a.m. on I-295 south at the 46-mile marker after he had been checked while parked on a shoulder by a Virginia State Trooper. The driver darted into traffic as he was being investigated for suspicion of drunk driving.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Steve Vick reports that Rodino’s blue Chevrolet Camaro was pulled over on the right shoulder of I-295 south with its hazards lights activated when a trooper stopped to offer assistance and found the vehicle was out of gas.  During the course of the traffic stop, the trooper detected a strong odor of alcohol.  While the driver and trooper were speaking outside of the vehicle, the driver turned and ran into the roadway and was struck by a passing tractor-trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer immediately stopped and medical personnel were notified.

Rodino, the driver of the Camaro, was transported to MCV hospital and later died from injuries sustained in the incident.

Virginia State Police Trooper J. Crawley is investigating the incident which remains under investigation.

Rodino is originally from Holland, Michigan and has family in that state. He was employed by the Hendricks Automotive Group in Charlotte, N.C.  Rodino played soccer at Northwood University in Michigan and studied accounting and sales.

Alec Rodino, 24, of Charlotte, North Carolina, formerly of Holland, Michigan, passed away suddenly on Friday, April 22, in Richmond, Virginia.

Alec was born October 8, 1991, in Grand Rapids to Jed and Kassie (Wagner) Rodino. He was baptized November 3, 1991, at Our Lady of Lake. He was the oldest of four boys in the Rodino family. He attended Corpus Christi Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated from West Ottawa High School in 2010. Alec enjoyed and excelled in baseball, soccer, and basketball through junior high and high school. At Northwood University, Alec played soccer and was a college ambassador, and made many of his dearest and strongest friendships. He graduated from Northwood in 2014 with an accounting degree. Alec began his career as a management trainee for Hendrick Automotive Group in Charlotte. He went on to become a junior accounting manager with the field audit team and was involved in a project in Richmond.

Alec loved adventure and put energy and effort into his life as a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend to many. He enjoyed living life to the fullest, at work, with family and friends, and conquering challenges large and small. His love, laugh, and sense of adventure will be profoundly missed.

He is survived by his parents, Jed and Kassie, brothers: Nathaniel, Christian, Brooks; grandparents Steve and Sandy Wagner, aunts and uncles: Trina (Rich) Hornor, Lydia (Craig) Adams, Lana Davis and Ray Stults, Jenny (Joe) Annee, Jill Schnell, Jeff (Melissa) Rodino, his loving cousins and family in Elkhart, Indiana, and Vero Beach, Florida. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Samuel and Christine Rodino.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 am, Thursday, April 28, 2016, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 480 152nd Ave. Holland MI 49424. Visitation will be 4-8 pm, Wednesday also at the church with a Vigil Service at 7:30 pm. Interment will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to West Ottawa H.S Athletic Dept., 1138 136th Ave, Holland, MI 49424, or Our Lady of the Lake Prayer Garden, 480 15nd Ave., Holland MI 49424.

Arrangements are by Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland.
