HAMMERED LAWMAKER HAMMERS TRAFFIC SIGN ON INTERSTATE

From The Clarion Register

State Senate President Pro Tempore Terry C. Burton, R-Newton, faces a charge of DUI after a minor single-car wreck on Interstate 20 in Scott County on Saturday night.

In a written statement, Highway Patrol Capt. Johnny Poulos said the Highway Patrol responded to a report of a wreck on I-20 in Scott County at about 10 p.m. He said Burton, 60, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox eastbound when it left the interstate and collided with a traffic sign.

“Burton was transported to the Scott County Detention Center and charged with driving under the influence,” Poulos said. “The crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.”

Further details were not being released.

Burton could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday.

Burton, as Senate president pro tem, is the second-ranking member of the state Senate behind Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and serves as chairman of the Rules Committee. He has been a top lieutenant in the Republican leadership under both Reeves and former Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck. Burton was elected to the pro tem position by his Senate colleagues in January. Burton, who has served in the Legislature for 25 years, represents District 31, which includes Lauderdale, Newton and Scott counties.

Burton has in the past supported stricter DUI penalties, including a bill he authored to allow multiple counts of DUI homicide from a single crash causing multiple fatalities…MORE

Impaired driver returned to scene of crash while he was still drunk

Trooper Caleb McGary arrested Sewall Maddocks, 26, of Castine, for OUI after responding to a vehicle crash on Perkins Street in Castine. It was determined that Maddocks had crashed his car into a parked car around 2330 hours the night prior and failed to notify police of the crash and left the scene, leaving his car behind. Maddocks arrived back on the scene while Tpr. McGary was conducting the investigation and after administering field sobriety, Maddocks was arrested for OUI.

5-7-16 Trooper Jeffrey Taylor arrested Richard Fickett, 57, of Cherryfield for Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol as a result of a traffic complaint for erratic operation.

Corporal Chris Smith responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 1 in Steuben. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the guardrail and then into a telephone pole. The driver Dustin Moore, 24, of Milbridge, was ejected through the windshield. Dustin was not properly wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Dustin was transported to MCMH for non-life threatening injuries. Speed, alcohol, and distracted driver are all contributing factors of the crash. A blood alcohol kit was obtained and Dustin was summonsed for operating under the influence and operating after suspension.

Corporal Chris Smith responded to the intersection of Egypt Lane and the Sunrise Trail in Franklin for a 911 call where a male was reporting being lost. The weather was raining very hard with high winds at this time. Cpl. Smith arrived on scene and found Kevin Ames, 24, of Orland lying face down in the roadway. Cpl. Smith conducted an operating under the influence investigation and located Kevin’s car crashed close by. Cpl. Smith later arrested Kevin for OUI-alcohol and transported him to the Hancock County Jail where he was charged. Trooper Corey Smith assisted.

Antwan Timbers Jr killed by DUI driver Ricardo Patterson III in City of Burlington NY 052216

MOUNT HOLLY, NEW JERSEY – Ricardo J. Patterson III, 42, of Willingboro, N. J., was arrested on May 22, 2016, and charged with killing a teenager in Burlington City; announced Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernard and Burlington City Police Chief Alan Snow.

The prosecutor reported that Patterson remained on the scene of the crash which took place at 12:08 am at Rt. 130 South and East Federal Street.

Killed was Antwan L. Timbers Jr., 17, who officials say was walking with a friend next to the roadway when Patterson drove his vehicle off the roadway and struck the teen dead on the scene.
Officials indicated that criminal charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and blood alcohol tests which will reveal the amount of booze and or drugs in Patterson’s system.

An autopsy is set for Monday, May 23, 2016, and school officials are deploying a squad of crisis counselors to help the teens at the Burlington City High School that impaired driving kills and specifically killed their fellow student.

The New Jersey State Police aided the Burlington City Police and County prosecutor with the investigation. The prosecutor, perhaps having an idea of the ability of the average citizen to understand basic elements of the law, even though jury pools are drawn from this group, specifically underscored the fact that persons charged with a crime are innocent until proven in a court of law. Until that time, they are only guilty of being a dirtbag in the court of public opinion.

Jon Gaw, on Friday, June 10, 2016, La Quinta Police Officers responded to the 52000 Block of Avenida Martinez in La Quinta, regarding a single car hit and run traffic collision, involving a possibly intoxicated driver.  A witness observed a white 2006 Ford F-150 swerving in the roadway.  The vehicle lost control and collided with a stucco wall at the roundabout at Calle Sinaloa and Eisenhower Dr., and then left the scene.  The witness followed the vehicle to Avenida Martinez, where the driver entered a residence.  The driver of the F-150, James Tucker, age 53 of La Quinta, was contacted and detained for the investigation of the Hit and Run.  Tucker sustained minor cuts and abrasions in the collision and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Driver’s License Checkpoint Results

Norco, CA – The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department/Jurupa Valley Station/Norco Office conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on June 11, 2016, at Hidden Valley Pkwy. and Corona Ave.  between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries.  A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drug impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.  Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.

DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint results:

  • 735 Vehicles traveled through the checkpoint.
  • 673 Vehicles were screened.
  • 3 Drivers were given field sobriety tests.
  • 2 DUI-Alcohol suspects were arrested.
  • 2 Drivers were cited for driving while unlicensed.
  • 6 Drivers were cited for driving while their driver’s license was suspended.
  • 7 Vehicles were towed.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department/Jurupa Valley Station/Norco Office will be conducting additional DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint operations throughout the year, in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.
