Thomas Walters charged with DUI by Norfolk Police after killing Nancy Kelly in crash 042416

Shortly after 12:00 a.m. on April 24, 2016, a motor vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of E. Princess Anne Road and Sewells Point Road.

Two vehicles, a Mitsubishi Galant, and a Dodge Caravan were stopped at a red light in the westbound lane of E. Princess Anne Road. A Toyota RAV-4, traveling westbound on E. Princess Anne Road, approached the intersection and failed to stop. The Toyota incidentally rear-ended the Dodge Caravan. The Caravan was then pushed into the Mitsubishi Galant.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Galant was not injured and refused medical treatment at the scene.

All occupants in the Dodge Caravan were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH). The driver and rear-seat passenger were released with minor injuries. However, the front seat passenger was listed in critical condition, after suffering extensive injuries in the crash. Shortly before 7:30 Sunday morning, the front seat passenger succumbed to her injuries and passed away in the hospital. She has been identified as Nancy Kelly, a 23-year-old Maryland resident.

The driver of the Toyota RAV-4 was also transported to SNGH, where he refused treatment. The driver, Thomas Walters of the 2200 block of Vista Circle in Virginia Beach, was transported from SNGH to the Norfolk Magistrate’s Office. Walters was then charged with the following:

-Driving Under the Influence
-Refusal to Submit to a Blood Sample

Walters remains in custody at the Norfolk City Jail.

The investigation is ongoing and is being handled by the Norfolk Police Department’s Traffic Unit. Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review and possible related charges.

A mother who allowed her two children to join her in riding with an impaired driver paid for her decision with her life and that of one of her children. The DUI driver survived, as did one child. The driver, Michael Mason, is now in jail facing charges.

CORONA – (INT) – A Claremont motorist could face murder charges in the wake of a weekend DUI freeway mishap in Corona that killed two of his passengers.

The California Highway Patrol said Monday that Michael Mason, 58, drove into a construction zone on Interstate 15 causing his SUV to overturn coming to rest upside down in a stack of lumber. One witness told the CHP the vehicle may have violently flipped as many as 20 times.

Killed were two of Mason’s three passengers, a 27-year-old Ashley Austin, and 6-year-old Christopher Austin. A 9-year-old girl survived. They were from Canyon Lake.

Mason was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on an assortment of charges.

From The Friday Flyer:

According to information received, CHP officers and other emergency first responders rushed to the location, where firefighters and paramedics provided life-saving efforts to Ashley and Christopher Austin. Ashley, who was in the right front passenger seat, and Christopher, who was seated in the right rear seat, both succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Paramedics also provided Mason and Abigail medical treatment for their injuries. Abigail, who had been seated in the back left side of the truck, was transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment for her minor injuries. Mason was transported to Riverside Community Hospital and treated for moderate injuries.

When he was medically cleared, he was arrested. Jail records reveal Mason was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for five felony charges related to the fatal accident. His charges included gross vehicular manslaughter, murder with malice, willful harm to a child, driving under the influence and felony DUI causing injury. He is being held without bail…..MORE

LAKE ELSINORE, CALIF. — According to Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Raymond Nava, on Friday, April 29, 2016, at 3:33 pm, officers from the Lake Elsinore Police Department responded to a vehicle vs. vehicle traffic collision with unknown injuries on Riverside Drive and Eisenhower Drive.

Preliminary investigation revealed Bruce Massard, 59 years-old, from Lake Elsinore, was exiting the driveway of an establishment onto Riverside Drive.  Massard failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was broadsided by a vehicle driving northbound.  Massard suffered non-life threatening injuries, which required he be transported to a local hospital.  Further investigation determined Massard to be under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs.  The other involved party, a resident of South Dakota, and her passenger were uninjured.  Northbound Riverside Drive was closed for approximately 40 minutes due to the collision.  Charges for Driving Under the Influence will be filed out-of-custody due to Massard’s medical condition.

The News-Press reports that Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Zachary Kureth, 24, intentionally hit the brakes on Interstate 75 “in an act of road rage,” triggering an April 19 crash that killed Robert Weinland, 79, of Sarasota. The crash, between the Daniels Parkway and Alico Road exits, also left Weinland’s 75-year-old passenger, Gisela Weinland, with serious injuries.

Kureth, who had been placed on probation 11 days before the fatal crash due to a DUI conviction, was booked into jail in Lee County on Saturday.

Troopers said Weinland was southbound on I-75 in his 2015 Chrysler Town & Country when he changed lanes in front of Kureth’s 2003 Dodge Caravan. Kureth then passed Weinland and changed back into Weinland’s lane.

Troopers said Kureth reduced his speed “to a stopped position,” forcing Weinland to do the same. A semi-truck behind Weinland couldn’t stop in time, rear-ending Weinland’s van and causing him to hit the right rear of another vehicle, investigators said. Weinland was pronounced dead at the scene. Kureth wasn’t hurt. MORE

ANDERSON, SC (05/08/2016) – South Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers said a man is charged with driving under the influence in a crash that killed one and injured a child in Anderson County Wednesday morning.

The crash happened on Pearman Dairy Road near Getsinger Road, just down the road from Westside High School, according to Coroner Greg Shore.

According to the SC Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 9 a.m.

Troopers said the driver of a 1996 Ford utility bucket truck crossed through the median and struck a 2003 Chevy SUV head-on. The driver of the Chevy was entrapped in the vehicle and succumbed to injuries at the scene.

A 4-year-old passenger in the Chevy, Pressley’s grandchild, was seat belted in a booster seat. The child was transported via EMS to Anmed Hospital. Family members said the boy suffered a broken hip, broken nose, and head trauma.

Shore identified the woman as Loretta Pressley.

A 4-year-old passenger in the Chevy, Pressley’s grandchild, was seat belted in a booster seat. The child was transported via EMS to Anmed Hospital. Family members said the boy suffered a broken hip, broken nose, and head trauma.

“It sounded like a big bomb went off. Really loud, and then smoke was coming from the truck,” witness April Murphy said .

Just after hearing the boom, Murphy said she heard crying and found the child in the back seat of the car. She said she held the child’s hand until EMS arrived.

The driver of the Ford, 29-year-old Jonathan Edward Hamby, has been charged with felony DUI involving death, felony DUI involving great bodily injury, and driving under suspension.

During a bond hearing Thursday, a judge advised Hamby that, if found guilty, he could face up to 45 years in prison. The judge set bond at $40,000. ….MORE

Summer safety tips from Sheriff Dan McClain

As we enter the spring season, please take extra caution to watch for children playing near our county roads. Slow down when driving through residential neighborhoods and school zones. Also, remember that children learn by watching us.

If you’re traveling with a child, please model good driving habits, including:

  • Wear your seat belts.
  • Obey speed limits.
  • Teach them why it’s important to slow near schools and neighborhoods.
  • Don’t text while driving.
  • Make sure children are in the right car seat.

Thank you for keeping our roads safe.
