FROM PATTERSON IRRIGATOR

06/08/2017 — A car carrying three 17-year-old boys from Patterson, California, crashed into a palm tree on East Las Palmas Avenue early Sunday morning, May 28, 2017, killing one and hospitalizing the others with major injuries.

The underage driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The vehicle left the road and hit the tree, overturning and coming to rest upside down in the middle of the roadway.

The crash occurred west of Sycamore Avenue at about 2:40 Sunday morning, when the boys were westbound in a 1998 Lexus. The vehicle left the road and hit the tree, overturning and coming to rest upside down in the middle of the roadway.

The vehicle’s rate of speed has not been determined.

The teen who died of injuries suffered in the crash was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Alexis Gomez-Morales.  MORE

Deputies and ABC Agents Arrest 20 People at the KAT Country Concert for Underage Drinking

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, through a grant funded by the California State Department of Alcohol Beverage Control, participated in a general enforcement operation at the” KAT Country 103 FM Listeners Appreciation Concert” on 06/03/2017.

KAT Country works very hard to ensure that minors are not provided alcohol at their annual concert and they provide a safe and secure environment for everyone who attends. Despite their efforts, there are still those who find a way to violate the law by consuming alcohol as a minor or provide alcohol to minors.

Deputies and Agents from the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control spent several hours at the concert focusing their attention on those who chose to violate the law, specifically underage drinking and providing alcohol to a minor. Twenty individuals were arrested for being underage in possession of alcohol or furnishing a minor with alcohol.

This joint operation is part of the ongoing effort by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control to promote safety in our community and enforce laws regarding the underage consumption of alcohol.

Joseph Estrella sentenced to 15 years in slammer for seventh DUI conviction; incapable of rehabilitation and danger to the community, says prosecutor Adam Cate

06/08/2017 — Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks has announced that a defendant in a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) case has received the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison after being convicted of a seventh driving under the influence offense.  The prior convictions spanned 19 years and involved misdemeanor and felony convictions in multiple California and Nevada jurisdictions. The sentence ensures that a minimum of 6 years must be served before parole eligibility begins.

Joseph Estrella sentened to 15 years in prison for 7th DUI

Joseph Estrella, 37, from Incline Village, was sentenced on one count of felony Driving Under the Influence in Washoe County District Court by Judge Jerome Polaha.  Estrella had previously pled guilty in February to the charge and was sentenced Tuesday to a maximum term of 15 years in prison.

At the sentencing hearing, Deputy District Attorney Adam Cate argued that Estrella’s six prior DUI offenses proved he was incapable of rehabilitation and a danger to the community

Estrella was pulled over on October 12, 2015, near the intersection of Mays Blvd. and Joyce Lane in Incline Village after a sergeant from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office observed him driving a vehicle with an inoperable brake light. After approaching the vehicle, the sergeant smelled marijuana and Estrella admitted to having smoked it prior to driving. Estrella was arrested and the case was submitted to this office for prosecution. Testing of Estrella’s blood after his arrest detected both marijuana and methamphetamine.

At the sentencing hearing, Deputy District Attorney Adam Cate argued that Estrella’s six prior DUI offenses proved he was incapable of rehabilitation and a danger to the community—citing the recent rash of DUI related fatalities in Washoe County.  Estrella’s request for a minimum sentence was denied.

WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS — 06/11/2017 — A Spring Grove man has been charged with felony aggravated DUI following a June 8, 2017, car crash in which his passenger was killed, Waukegan police said.

Max Barraza, 27, also charged with DUI, is believed to have had a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit of .08 at the time of the three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Green Bay Road and Washington Street, Waukegan Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said.

Killed in the 9 p.m. crash was Adrian Biedzinski, age 35, of Round Lake Beach, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper. An autopsy performed Friday determined the preliminary cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries.

Biedzinski, who was wearing a seat belt at the time, was trapped inside Barraza’s pickup truck, Florip said. The coroner’s office arrived about 9:45 p.m. and determined Biedzinski died while inside the vehicle, he said.   MORE

DUI driver Chris Dent slammed into Trooper Solomon Flash investigating traffic collision on Washington Beltway; trooper and Anthony Owelle, one of the drivers hit sent to hospital

NBC WASHINGTON — A Maryland state trooper is hospitalized for injuries he sustained early this morning when his patrol car was struck by an alleged impaired driver, while the trooper was parked at the scene of a traffic crash in Prince George’s County. News4’s Derrick Ward reports.

A Maryland State Police trooper and a pedestrian were hit early Sunday morning by a driver who was intoxicated, police said.

A state police statement said the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in Prince George’s County, Maryland, along Route 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) just west of Presidential Parkway. They said Trooper Solomon Flash was investigating a traffic collision when he was struck by another vehicle.

After hitting the patrol car, the vehicle continues and struck a pedestrian who was standing near the guardrail. The pedestrian, Anthony Owelle, 28, of Laurel, Maryland, was one of the drivers involved in the original collision.

Police said the driver, Chris M. Dent, 37, of Upper Marlboro, who struck the officer was intoxicated and taken into custody. He was not injured in the crash and has been initially charged with driving under the influence.

Flash was taken to the hospital with a possible concussion, according to police. He was conscious when he was transported. Owelle was also transported to the hospital.

According to the News4 I-Team, at least 37 Maryland State Police troopers have been hit by vehicles since January 2016.  MORE
