From WESH

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (06/17/2017) —A Volusia County woman was arrested for DUI and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. The crash occurred in Ormond Beach at 11:12 p.m. Friday, at South Atlantic Ave. and Milsap Road.

Ormond Beach Police say Charles Bofinger, 63, of Pittsburgh, Penn. was crossing A1A at that location, when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Jessica Struthers, 25. The vehicle did not stop. A witness heard the crash and turned to see the white SUV leaving the scene.

The Ormond Beach Police report states that “The victim had severe head trauma and was not responsive.” Bofinger was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead.

Debris from the vehicle showed that it was a Mazda. Police issued a description of the SUV to law agencies in the area to watch for the vehicle. About 30 minutes after the crash, Kevin Wakefield called police saying his girlfriend Jessica Struthers,
had been involved in a crash. Wakefield told police that Struthers “… did not know what she hit and thought somebody threw something at her vehicle.”  MORE

Delaware State Police Report Cody Hopkins Dead; Speed and Alcohol Factors in Crash

Milford- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that has claimed the life of a Milford man which occurred early this week.

The investigation thus far has determined that the crash occurred on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at 11:24 p.m., as Cody S. Hopkins, 24, was operating a 2006 Dodge Ram and was traveling in a northbound direction on Canterbury Road just south of Blue Jay Lane. As Hopkins attempted to negotiate a curve in the roadway, his vehicle’s right side tires traveled off of the east edge of the roadway. The Ram then re-entered the roadway and began to rotate in a clockwise direction before skidding off of the roadway. It then traveled in a northeasterly direction before striking a group of trees and overturning, ejecting Hopkins onto Blue Jay Lane. The Dodge continued traveling in a northeasterly direction until it came to rest on its right-hand side on Blue Jay Lane.

Speed and alcohol use appear to be factors in this crash which remains under investigation at this time.

Cody Hopkins, who was not properly restrained at the time of the crash, was removed from the scene and transported to the Milford Memorial Hospital. He was later transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition before being declared dead on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. Speed and alcohol use appear to be factors in this crash which remains under investigation at this time.

EKIN – Bond was set Wednesday at $500,000 for a Morton man when he was charged with killing a motorcyclist while allegedly driving drunk late Tuesday.

Colton Vinovich, 25, told his father at the crash site, “I guess I smoked the stop sign” at Tennessee Avenue and Queenwood Road southeast of Morton, according to a prosecutor’s court affidavit.

Vinovich also told police at the scene that he had stopped at the intersection but didn’t see Burger’s motorcycle approaching on his right as he pulled into the crossing that’s located within unobstructed farm fields.

He said he was heading home as he drove north on Tennessee at about 11 p.m. when the motorcycle, westbound on Queenwood, slammed into the passenger side of his Jeep SUV. Parts of the motorcycle were found embedded in the Jeep. Queenwood is not controlled by a stop sign at the intersection, Morton police said.   MORE

Daniel Scott Bradford sentenced to 18 years in prison for repeat DWI convictions

From Stephenville Empire=Tribune

06/24/2017   –   Today, after deliberating for under an hour, a jury of six women and six men sentenced a man to 18 years in the penitentiary for Driving While Intoxicated.

Daniel Scott Bradford pleaded not guilty to felony D.W.I., and a two-part trial was held in the 266th District Court to determine his guilt and punishment. After the verdict was rendered, Judge Jason Cashon immediately imposed the sentence.

Bradford, 37, had been previously convicted twice for D.W.I. in 2005 and 2008. He also had been convicted of Felony D.W.I. – 3rd or more in 2008. Because of his previous convictions, Bradford was facing two to twenty years in prison for the felony D.W.I. Testimony in the trial from Trooper Terry Jones revealed that shortly before midnight on May 5, 2016, Bradford was pulled over for speeding on North Highway 377. After failing to stop for approximately four miles, Bradford stopped his Chevrolet pickup but refused for several minutes to exit the vehicle. After finally exiting his vehicle, Bradford showed signs of intoxication.

Bradford announced to the officers that “this is the reason you guys are getting your heads blown off,” and that he wished he had a gun in the truck so he could have shot officers in the head.

Dash camera video played in the courtroom showed Bradford being belligerent with Trooper Jones and Sheriff’s deputies at the scene and at the hospital where his blood was drawn for analysis. Bradford announced to the officers that “this is the reason you guys are getting your heads blown off,” and that he wished he had a gun in the truck so he could have shot officers in the head.

A blood sample was taken from Bradford. The DPS Crime Laboratory in Abilene found the sample contained a blood alcohol concentration of 0.22, just under three times the 0.08 level which defines intoxication.   MORE

Oscar’s family ask for help with funeral

From Gofundme.com

Oscar was only 14 years old when his life was taken away from him when a drunk driver hit his mother’s car. He was the only boy in the family and was his sisters and mother’s keeper. His family is devasted with the loss of his life and need help to cover funeral and medical expenses for his mother as she was also very badly injured. The Covarrubias family would greatly appreciate any help and prayers as we endure these difficult moments. Thank you.

Oscar solo tenia 14 anos cuando su vida fue arrebatada por un conductor que manejaba bajo la influencia del alcohol. On June 24, at 9:37 P.M., Deputy Arney arrived and entered the dwelling then proceeded to the basement where he found approximately twenty juveniles, open beer cans, and alcohol bottles. The Deputy also met with some the parents of the juveniles at the residence, and they detailed how they made multiple attempts to contact the homeowner throughout the night without success.

Deputy Klemp and Sergeant Lehning arrived to assist with the incident, and Sergeant Lehning found the homeowner, Tracy Cicero, 51, of Clarence hiding in the dwelling.  Cicero is charged with 2nd-degree criminal nuisance – creating conditions which endanger others, a Class-B misdemeanor.

The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents, and Cicero was released after being processed and faces a future court date.
